STRADH Empowered Human Rights Activists with Skills for Ethical Advocacy and Digital Safety

Human rights activists during the session on Communication tools security

From the 25th and 29th August 2025, STRADH brought together human rights activists for a transformative training aimed at sharpening their skills in monitoring, documenting, reporting, advocacy, and digital tools security. In a world where human rights defense challenges demand professionalism and vigilance, these sessions ignited a spark of change, equipping participants with practical knowledge and tools to carry out their work safely and effectively. Beyond technical skills, the training emphasized professionalism, responsibility, and the ethical practice of human rights work.

Throughout the sessions, participants learned how to systematically collect and verify information, document incidents accurately, and create clear, actionable reports. They practiced presenting their findings in ways that are credible, persuasive, and accessible, ensuring their work could influence decision-making and promote justice in their communities.

Participants also explored strategies to protect communication tools, secure communications and information including victims and witness protection, and reduce risks when using technology. Hands-on exercises helped them apply these skills in realistic scenarios, reinforcing the importance of digital safety in today’s human rights landscape.

By the end of the program, participants left not only with enhanced skills but also with renewed confidence and motivation to advocate effectively. This training demonstrates the power of equipping human rights defenders: as they master advocacy and ethical documentation, they are better able to transform communities, hold power to account, and contribute to stronger human rights networks. Together, we can build a world where every voice is heard and justice is within reach.

A journalists who documented the training noted that participants felt well-equipped by the program. In reflecting on their experiences, many also recognized that, in the past, they had sometimes carried out monitoring and reporting in ways that were unintentionally unprofessional. The training gave them the opportunity to identify these gaps, learn better approaches, and commit to improving the quality and integrity of their future work.
